Welcome to the nourishingmoms blog!  We look forward to hearing your ideas, giving support, and being put to the challenge of simplifying your experience of motherhood.  Please use this space as a place to share and discover ideas, and to -- question, question, question!!!!

Becoming a mother in this day and age comes with many choices -- sometimes too many choices.  Not the least confusing is how to feed ourselves.  As integrative health coaches, we know that feeding your nutritional hunger is only part of the equation.  To achieve our greatest overall wellness, we need to feed our need to move, to create, to slow down, to say no, to do more, to do less... you get the picture.  With our unique lives come unique needs.  Yes, we all want to do what is best nutritionally for our growing babies, and hopefully ourselves, but your best may differ from somebody else's best.  We feel that with simple solutions and the guidance and support from a community of mothers, everyone can upgrade their "daily bread", no matter what their situation.

Does that mean we all need to press our own almond milk and cook our beans from scratch?  Of course not.  It is impressive and ideal to do so, but it might not be so realistic.  In today's world, we have MANY choices. So let's start by figuring out exactly what we need, what we can do, and what we will do.

What seems realistic for you to improve upon? It might be adding frozen peas to our mac and cheese.  For some of us it will be kraft and for other it will be Annie's.  You know who you are.  No matter where we are in this journey, we all have one thing in mind... eating better to keep ourselves and our families healthy.  We want digestible advice and easy solutions.  We at nourishingmoms understand this and are here to nourish YOU, one step at a time.

What do you find most confusing about eating now that you're pregnant or a new mom?
Post your challenges and we will be sure to respond.  If you have any great ideas that are working for you, this is a great place to share. Let the conversation begin!

This is the best idea! Nourishing Moms makes me want to get pregnant just to make use of this wonderful resource. Just curious, what kind of supplements, if any, are readers taking while expecting?

I look forward to reading this blog over the next nine months of my pregnancy! Good job! I do want to share one amazing nutritional assistant in my first few weeks. I was so nauseous that I was hardly eating a thing until I discovered sea bands. These simple acupressure wrist bands have kept my nausea away and allowed me to eat healthy foods without worrying if I could keep them down. They were about $7 at a big drug store chain. Highy recommended for morning sickness that can get in the way of good eating habits!

Nancy,
As you can imagine, there will be many answers to this question! I took prenatal vitamins with my first pregnancy. They made me quite ill, and had to take them at night with food. With my second pregnancy, I took prenatals occasionally. I did not take them everyday, as I was eating a whole foods diet, and did not feel that I needed them. I also took fish oil periodically with my second. Marcela had a similar experience, as she did not take prenatals with her second, or anything consistently for that matter. She just forgot! I am curious to what others have been doing.

Sooo excited about you and this!! Much anticipated!! Are you going to cover toddlers as well? -- As a mom who is always striving to be a NOURISHING one to our 1 1/2 yr old son, my big issue now is whether to serve him Soy milk vs Cow's , or Soy milk vs Goat's.
Can't wait to hear your ideas!
(And he is fine with either Soy or Cow's, but hasn't had the pleasure (?) of tasting Goat's milk yet - bought some today tho!)

HI Jinsey,

The whole question of dairy is a really good one. There are plenty of opinions out there, both for it and against it.
Now if the question is Soy versus Cow here is my opinion: I would stick to HIGH QUALITY COW'S MILK. What does that mean? Ideally from organic fed, grass-fed cows and as close as possible to it's natural state. Commercial milk is also highly processed... even the organic kind. All the pasteurization and homogenization changes some of the qualities of the milk. In terms of goat's milk, I would use the same criteria. Now the choice would be which one will work better for your child. How does his digestive and immune system react to them?

From a personal point of view, a chose Goat's milk with my first child to supplement the breast (I didn't really have that much breast milk the first time around) but only till my son was 1-year-old. After that I did not see the need to be given him much dairy of any kind since he was eating a very balanced diet of solid foods by then. Same with my second. The only difference is that I gave her cow's milk formula to supplement the breast because she really didn't do well with goat's milk. But after 12 months I made sure that they had a strong foundation diet based on whole foods so they wouldn't depend on dairy anymore.

If it's important to you to feed him some dairy, try the goat's milk and see how it goes. Take the clues and information your child's body will be giving you to make the decision to continue or not.

Hope that helps!

Good luck, keep the questions coming and let us know how it goes.
